I had never heard of Laryngomalacia, Tracheomalacia or Tracheobronchomalacia until my friends' son Lorenzo was diagnosed. His first month of life no one caught it. He was having trouble eating, spit up a lot, was a very noisy breather and had stridor and gasping spells in his sleep.
Malacia is generally explained as “floppiness” of the airways - effecting the larynx, windpipe or extending into smaller passages in the lungs. It can effect one or more of those areas. Its a tricky defect, in that the majority of cases do not require surgery- children tend to grow out of the symptoms in the first few years of life, but these defects can cause a multitude of complications while the child is “waiting it out.”
Scared, overwhelmed and confused, my friend found Coping with Laryngomalacia. It was the ONLY community she found for families with children diagnosed with this unpredictable defect. This non-profit organization provides information and support for families who are struggling with the challenges of caring for a child with Laryngomalacia, Tracheomalacia or Tracheobroncomalacia. It also provides care packages for babies & children during hospital stays & undergoing surgeries for malacia complications.
Lorenzo was ultimately diagnosed with Laryngomalacia and Tracheobronchomalacia at a little over a month old. They certainly have their struggles, but my friends are incredibly lucky to have been able to manage his symptoms at home with minimal interventions. But the majority of babies with Lorenzo's diagnosis are not so lucky- so we would like to pay our good fortune forward and send a little comfort to those children awaiting surgeries and in recovery because of this defect.
If you visit the Coping with Laryngomalacia website, you’ll find that their “mascot” is a little lamb named Lu. So we’ve chosen this adorable lamb print as a nod to Lu, who provides so much comfort to so many children.
"Lorenzo the Lamb" products can be purchased for yourself, as a gift, or designated to be sent to Coping with Laryngomalacia for their care packages. We will include a personal note from the Baiada family acknowledging the in kind donation.
